This was the book that launched the historic preservation
movement in New Jersey.
Despite the suggestion that this is a
book about architecture and preservation, it is, in fact, about families
and their homes. The author chose about fifty of New Jersey's most noteworthy
houses and studied their owners in depth. He found anecdotes from friends,
neighbors and family members that have been well-preserved here - even
if the house itself is long gone. Reproductions of the superb illustrations
by John Rae may be downloaded within the PDF edition (a sample is available
below).
The houses are mostly in the northern
half of New Jersey, Burlington and Trenton.
