This classic local history chronicles the settlement of Madison from the early 1700s through the Revolution and the 1800s. General Washington's army spent two winters nearby (in Morristown), and the author pays special attention the the local effects of those historic encampments. Local lore and legend includes the tales of the original settlers, the first churches, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne's headquarters, histories of various landmark homes (Ward, Talmadge, Windeyer, Woodruff, Johnson, Boisaubin, etc.) and the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette in 1825.
